Lamar, Bellaire Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Winners

This year’s final group of National Merit Scholarship winners was announced on Monday, and 10 Houston Independent School District seniors are on the list. The winners include five seniors from Bellaire High School, three Lamar High School seniors, and one student each from Carnegie Vanguard High School and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

Nationwide, 2,000 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities were announced. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Bellaire High School winner Patrick E. Breen won a scholarship from Rice University and plans a career in the field of law. Bellaire winner Maya V. Gascoyne won a scholarship from Concordia College and is considering a career in music education.

Bellaire senior Jessica L. Hester received a scholarship from Harvey Mudd College and plans a career in physics and astrophysics. Kelsey M. Johnson of Bellaire won a scholarship from Washington University in St. Louis and is considering a career in international relations. Bellaire’s fifth winner is Claire K. Morice, who won a scholarship from Rice University and plans a career in law.

Lamar High School senior Donald W. Ross received a scholarship from Fordham University and plans a career in international business. Lamar winner Rebecca C. Searle received a scholarship from Rice University and plans to study medicine. Lamar senior Kendra M. Williamson won a scholarship from Vanderbilt University and plans a career in engineering.

Carnegie Vanguard senior Sanders Butler has won a scholarship from Macalester College and is undecided as to his future career field. HSPVA senior Maricor R. Lisk won a scholarship from Texas A&M University and plans a career in engineering.

On May 27, this year’s third round of National Merit Scholarship winners was announced and 13 HISD seniors were on the list. On May 6, 2,500 winners of $2,500 scholarships were announced nationwide, including six HISD seniors. On April 22, about 1,000 recipients of corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards were named nationwide, including two HISD students.
