Lanier Wins Sixth Consecutive National Debate Championship

July 1, 2008 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The Lanier Middle School Speech and Debate Team won its sixth consecutive national championship this weekend.
After facing teams from diverse locations, including New York, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Texas and Saipan, Lanier won for the sixth consecutive time at the IDEA National Junior Forensic League Tournament, held this year in Bowling Green at Western Kentucky University.
The students will return from Kentucky today. This was debate team coach Franz Hill’s first year leading the Lanier team. Former Lanier debate coach Jim Henley retired after the national championships last year.
“I’m just amazed – it’s inspiring to watch them work together as a team,” said Hill. As in previous years, Lanier debate team alumni came back to help this year’s debaters. Hill coached the debate team at Jane Long Middle School for four years before coming to Lanier.
