Lifeguards to the rescue: Bellaire extends pool hours

There’s good news in Bellaire as the heat wave continues: The city is extending hours at all city pools, beginning today (Saturday, July 16).

The extended hours will run through Aug. 14, when the season winds down and the schedule returns to weekend hours only.

While the Bellaire Family Aquatics Center in Town Square will still be closed on Wednesdays, hours have been extended to 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays, and 1-8 p.m. Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Evergreen Pool and the therapy pool will be open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; and 1-8 p.m. Sundays.

The city is finally up to full staffing of lifeguards, with all 85 positions now filled, according to this week’s city manager’s report. Despite raising the hourly pay rate to $13, Bellaire experienced the same challenges that are being seen nationwide in hiring lifeguards.
