Bellaire recently had a new mayor for the day.
Harry Goldberg, a 9-year-old artist, inventor, scholar and kid, oversaw the goings on in Bellaire on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
The Mayor, who describes himself as an artist, inventor, scholar and kid on his business card, is homeschooled and attends an online school called Connections Academy. He also attends Chinese school.
Goldberg has participated in the Houston Art Car Parade for the past 10 years and invented a car called the “Power Nap,” which was solar powered.
Goldberg’s parents won the opportunity to be mayor for a day at an auction at the Nature Discovery Center.
Some of the perks of being Mayor of Bellaire for a day included having pizza at city hall, visiting senior services, touring the fire station and going in a jail cell at the police station.
Goldberg did a ride along with a Bellaire police officer and was allowed to cross the “do not cross” line at the police station.
He also toured the library and learned how books are ordered and visited the Parks and Recreation Department.
The only part of the city Goldberg didn’t get to see was the public works department, he said.
His favorite part of the day was visiting the police station and the fire station.
“It was pretty cool,” he said.
Goldberg will get to ride on the Bellaire fire truck in the Fourth of July parade in 2011.

Thanks for telling us about our Mayor for the Day. I really enjoyed meeting him this past weekend. I am sure this is not the last we hear about this talented, personable young man.
Angel F says
Whoo hoo! Congratulations, Harry!
My kids Trey and John, also Connections Academy Students, wave hello to you from central Florida. John, my nine year old, says, “He didn’t have to grow up and he got to be mayor! Not fair.” But he smiled afterward. He’s so very happy for you, Harry, and no doubt so are you family and other friends.
All the best to you,
Angel F

Yo Bruiser. I mean, your Honor Harry.
Congrats on the Mayor gig. We all knew you were destined for high places even before your were born.
Also, can you do anything about a traffic ticket?
No reason, no reason.
We’ll talk.
Fredrick and Pam Stafford says
This is a young man destined to do great things in this world.
You go Bruiser. Today Mayor, tomorrow President or Artist…..
Whatever you decide, we are sure it will be special.
One of Bruisers, er your honors paintings is on display in the current show (Good Gulf) at the Art Car Museum. A wonderful watercolor of a seabird (not a rabbit). Come by and see his work, the show is up till Jan. 13.
Awesome! Way to go Bruiser, glad you had fun.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones says
Congratulations Harry! So Awesome to be a mayor of Bellaire for a day. and get to do all those exciting activities. Aren’t you a student in HEP on Mondays??? Can we include this in the HEP yearbook for 2011?
Beatrice and Fredrick says
Bravo!
You have made it at the bottom, now your way is up.
Mom says
‘Tis true, Mr. and Mrs. Jones. Bruiser also attends classes at HomeEdPlus on Mondays and shares time with wonderful children and teachers. He truly enjoys the art, drama and writing classes he takes there and notes improvement in skills because of those classes. The interview was taken during a football game so he was a little distracted and Bruiser sincerely regrets leaving out an important part of his life.
