The venerable Tex-Mex favorite, Los Tios, is launching a year-long celebration to mark its 50th anniversary in business, including its nearby Meyerland location, one of five in the Houston area. Started in 1970 by the Garbett family, the chain was purchased by Bellaire’s Gary Adair, founder of Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill, 20 years ago.
It’s now part of the multigenerational, 10-restaurant Adair Concepts group managed by Nick and Katie Adair Barnhart, Bellaire natives who still have deep ties to the area, including running Betsy’s at Evelyn’s Park in Bellaire. Betsy is named for their mother, who opened and ran Skeeter’s with Gary more than 30 years ago.
“Not much about the Los Tios menu has changed over these last 30 years because our devoted diners just wouldn’t have it,” said Gary Adair — although the restaurants have upped their fajita and margarita offerings and added breakfast (which has been suspended during the pandemic). He said his customers have reminded him that Los Tios is “more than a restaurant — a port in a storm serving comfort food in uncomfortable times.”
