Houston ISD will open its 2023-24 school choice applications “midday” today (Wednesday, Dec. 14), and families have until Feb. 2 to research and apply if they want to attend a specialty program outside their attendance zone, with a lottery determining who gets in.
Except for during the winter break, campuses are hosting Magnet Thursday tours and information sessions, and a series of School Choice Fairs will be conducted through the Phase 1 application period.
With the process already locked in place, HISD conducted a survey that closed Nov. 30 to “share your thoughts about the School Choice process, program options, and factors that influence your school of choice” so that the district could “use this valuable information to effect change over the next few years.”
One issue that became obvious from social media outrage and won’t need to await survey results was the district’s timetable that has families being informed the week of April 5 whether their applications are successful or not. Parents who are also making private school applications pointed out that most of those schools require a commitment and a deposit before that date.
