Here’s a lesson from West University Place Police: Don’t visit the police station bloody and bruised from a car accident and then try to report that your car was stolen.
One West U. man learned this the hard way and ended up being charged with making a false report to a police officer.
The resident called police around 7:32 a.m. on Nov. 25 and reported his car was stolen during the night.
“If you’re sitting at home asleep you’re obviously not going to look like you’ve been in a car accident, all cuts and bruises and bleeding,” said West U. Lt. Charlie Deily.
A couple hours later an officer called the man into the police station and took a sworn statement about the car theft. But investigations revealed the man had actually crashed his car in Houston and asked a friend to drive him home. He then allegedly reported the car stolen to try to blame the car accident on the imaginary thief.
“He was trying to pull a fast one,” Deily said. He said the resident may have been intoxicated when he crashed his car.
