Man Throws Himself At Oncoming Car, Shatters Window Of Police Car

July 14, 2008 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

West University Place officers are in the process of assessing the amount of damage done to a police vehicle by an apparently suicidal man.
Police were called to the intersection of Kirby Drive and University Boulevard around 11:45 p.m. July 6 regarding an auto/pedestrian accident. A man who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol allegedly threw himself onto a passing vehicle in an attempt to injure himself.
The man became violent with police, spitting on three of them, and had to be subdued. While inside the police car, he broke out the right rear passenger window. The man was taken to Ben Taub and treated for minor injuries, then released to West U. Police.
The police department estimates it will cost around $300 to $400 to replace the windshield, and the department also incurred the cost of a Hazmat clean-up of the car, which had the victim’s blood in the backseat along with shattered glass.
At this point, the man has been charged with harassment of a public servant. Police representatives say more charges will likely be filed when the total amount of damage to the police car is known.
