The HISD Board Auditorium was filled to capacity last week as parents and students from all over the district came to hear what it takes to get accepted at a Tier 1, Ivy League University. For two hours the capacity crowd listened and asked questions.

HISD hosted a panel discussion on Dec. 15 to teach students and parents about gaining entry to Ivy League universities.

HISD Superintendent Terry Grier invited representatives from the admissions offices at Brown, Harvard, Rice, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Yale to participate in the event, which HISD plans to hold annually. Participants learned that it take more than good grades to get in.

Panelists provided information about student selection, essay writing and scholarship opportunities. They stressed that they look for the well-rounded students who have taken rigorous courses and been involved in their communities, taken leadership roles and have special talents.

“Many of the participating students did not think that such prestigious universities would even consider them, but after hearing from the panel they now know it is possible,” according to a statement by Martha Salazar-Zamora, HISD assistant superintendent for school support services. “The panel made it very clear that they are looking for qualified minority students.
