Mayor Cindy Siegel recently proclaimed Samuel Collins as an outstanding citizen in Bellaire for his work to improve literacy through his organization, R.E.A.D for Houston.
Siegel proclaimed Collins as an outstanding citizen during the city council’s Dec. 20 meeting. Collins created the organization, R.E.A.D. (Recycle, Engage And Donate Your Used Books) for Houston, which collects book donations from various sources and distributed them to centers in Bellaire and Houston. The organization promotes literacy through reading and mentorship.
Collins’ organization recently benefited the Head Start Freedom Station, located on Bissonnet Street in Bellaire.
R.E.A.D for Houston collects new and gently used books in Houston and the surrounding areas.
“By recycling, engaging in your community, and donating your used books, you give new life to your old books,” according to the R.E.A.D. website.
