A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Oct. 26) for former West University Place Mayor John Neighbors, who died Aug. 27 at the age of 92.
The service will take place at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston.
Neighbors and his wife, Jean — who died in 2012 — lived in West U for more than 50 years. He was elected mayor in 1970 after serving on the Board of Adjustment and City Commission (now Zoning & Planning Commission). Later, his leadership in issues affecting senior citizens led him to the city’s Senior Services Board, where he served as longtime chairman, and inspired the naming of the city’s seniors’ activity room after him.
Neighbors served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, worked in the petroleum industry, and later had his own business, specializing in retirement planning.
