Mom/Dad homework: Required HISD parent course on virtual learning goes live

August 10, 2020 by Charlotte Aguilar

Houston ISD launched its online course Monday (Aug. 10) to help youngsters with the district’s online learning system that families will encounter when school resumes Sept. 8.

The Parent Introduction to Virtual Learning is available on the HISD @ H.OM.E platform, by clicking on the bar at the top of the page. Parents are expected to complete the course, which is offered in four languages, by Sept. 4.

Among the subjects addressed are:

  • Ways parents can support virtual learning
  • Technology supports
  • Supports for special populations
  • Academic policies specifically relating to virtual learning
The parent course offers instruction on the various technologies that students will be using to study, learn and communicate. (HoustonISD.org)

According to HISD, the course supports its “asynchronous instructional model” designed to allow students to work at their own pace. While teachers will be available to provide live instructional support, this mode of instruction does not require real-time interactions.

The district website offers a “reopening” section with FAQs, a timeline, parent guide, and other resources at HoustonISD.org/reopening.

Pre-K registration for HISD is already underway, with K-12 registration starting Aug. 17 for those not already enrolled.
