Natural Gas Leak Caused By Ruptured Lines During Median Excavation

October 7, 2008 by Bellaire Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

Construction crews excavating in the median of the 4100 block of Bellaire Boulevard ruptured two high pressure natural gas mains around 2:33 p.m. Monday.

The West U. Fire Department was contacted by employees at 4130 Bellaire Blvd., who said they could smell gas in their building. About 50 people were evacuated from several buildings on the north side of Bellaire Boulevard, and Bellaire was closed to traffic from Stella Link to Westpoint until 6:25 p.m.

Centerpoint had a supervisor on the site soon after the leak, and a repair crew arrived around 5:15 p.m. The leak was stopped around 6:25 p.m. The WUFD sent crews into affected buildings with gas meters to check for dangerous pockets of gas that could be explosive. The “all-clear” was given at 6:51 p.m.
