UPDATED AT 1:15 P.M. The area for the shelter-in-place has been reduced to a half-mile radius. See accompanying map.

Residents of Bellaire have been told to shelter-in-place as Houston firefighters battle a stubborn chemical blaze in a metal plating business just north of the city.

Hazmat crews were first dispatched to the scene, in the 6200 block of Royalton St., around 4:30 Saturday morning. When the blaze flared up again after crews believed they had it controlled, the shelter warning was issued around 10:30 a.m. for a 1.5-mile radius.

The business is at the intersection of Royalton and Elm Streets, just a few blocks north of the Bellaire Post Office and near the city’s downtown. Motorists are told to avoid the area.

Those under the shelter warning are urged to stay indoors, turn off their air conditioning units and keep doors and windows tightly closed.
