New Fire Station Could Be Complete By Sept. 2010

January 20, 2009 by Bellaire Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

If Bellaire can stay on track of a relatively tight timeline, ground could be broken on the new fire station as soon as September of this year, with completion expected about a year later.

The current fire station is undergoing lead and asbestos testing now, which is required before demolition can occur. Bellaire City Manager Bernie Satterwhite told council Monday that the city will soon advertise for a competitive sealed proposal for a construction manager at-risk. Interviews with top candidates should take place around the end of February, with the contract awarded by March 16.

Council unanimously approved a $346,000 contract Dec. 2 of last year for the design of a new fire station to replace the city’s 53-year old fire house.

The Council awarded the design contract to architects PGAL (Pierce Godwin Alexander & Linville) for the design and expenses associated with a new, 16,000-square foot, six-bay fire station that will be replace the old fire house, built in 1955  at the corner of Jessamine and S. Rice.

Bellaire voters approved the issuance of bonds for a new $5 million fire station in 2005, as part of a $50 million bond election to upgrade city streets and city facilities, including the city’s new Bellaire Town Square Family Aquatics Center. In addition to the new pool and fire station, the city has plans to upgrade the police station, municipal court and complete renovations at city hall.  About $40 million of the 2005 Rebuild Bellaire bonds were for street and drainage improvements.
