Maynor, who opened his bakery in October, comes into the shop everyday around 4 or 5 a.m. to start making cupcakes. By the time the shop opens at 9 a.m., he has made and frosted about 10 different flavors of cupcakes.
He does everything himself from baking, decorating and interacting with customers. When he needs to make a delivery close by, he puts a sign out saying he will be right back.
“This is what I wanted to do,” he said. “This is fun.”
All of his cupcakes are uniquely named and include flavors such as “I Do, I Do,” a white vanilla wedding cake with white vanilla buttercream icing topped with dragees or colored pareills, or “Devil Made Me Eat It,” a dark chocolate cake filled with imported truffles with chocolate or vanilla buttercream icing, topped with chocolate sprinkles or chocolate shavings, among others.
Maynor’s favorite cupcake is “Sugs Velvet Red,” a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, topped with red sugar crystals. The cupcake is named for his mother, who was known as “Sugar.”
Many of Maynor’s recipes are inspired by family recipes. He grew up in Beaumont, Texas on a rice farm and often made cakes for his family and friends.
After more than 20 years as a retail manager for Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Marshall Field’s, Maynor decided to take his cupcake hobby and turn it into a business.
He found the property at 5209 Bellaire Blvd. in August and opened his doors around Halloween. The store used to be a dress sample shop and didn’t have a kitchen, he said.
Maynor remodeled the shop and created a kitchen in the back where he cooks all of his cupcakes and creations.
Maynor uses floor, sugar and butter in his cupcakes and gets all of his products from the local grocery stores. Everything you see in the grocery store is in his cupcakes, he said.
The bakery also features themed cookies and specialty cakes. To order specialty cakes and cookies, call 713-660-8118.
