In the showdown for Bellaire mayor, former councilman and mayor pro tem Gus Pappas has pulled out to a hefty lead over newcomer Aaron Perry in early and mail-in voting.
Pappas leads 1,086-753 over Perry, or 59-41 percent in the first tally. The candidates are seeking to replace Andrew Friedberg, who has reached term limits after eight years — four terms — as Bellaire’s mayor.
Pappas was the leading vote-getter in the general election Nov. 7. In the runoff, Perry received the endorsement of the third candidate, incumbent Councilmember Nathan Wesely, and two other council incumbents, Catherine Lewis and Jim Hotze.
Because the Bellaire runoff is a joint election and run by Harris County, Bellaire voters could vote Saturday at any of 450 polling places, so the final results aren’t expected until late Saturday or early Sunday.
In the race for Houston mayor, early and mail-in voting went decisively to John Whitmire, a 40-year state senator, over U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, 65-35%, with 131,000 ballots counted.
