The showdown between a political veteran and a newcomer will be settled in a runoff today (Saturday, Dec. 9) as Bellaire voters select their new mayor.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with early voting results expected shortly after voting ends. Essentials News will report the figures as they are released.
On the ballot are two attorneys:
•Aaron Perry, who had never been involved in Bellaire government and was largely unknown when he declared his candidacy. He attracted and spent donations of $50,000-plus in the general election on a high-profile advertising campaign that earned him his spot in the runoff with 30 percent of the vote.
•Gus Pappas, a former two-term councilmember, who served as mayor pro tem for one of those terms. He was the top vote-getter on Nov. 7 with 42 percent of the vote.
The third candidate, incumbent Councilmember Nathan Wesely, trailed with 28 percent, and has endorsed Perry.
There will be two polling places in Bellaire — at the Civic Center, 7008 S. Rice Ave., and at Faith Lutheran Church, 4600 Bellaire Blvd., but because Houston’s runoff for mayor is also being held today, Bellaire voters can choose to cast their ballots at any of 450 polling places, including the nearby HCC West Loop Campus, Cunningham Elementary and Pershing Middle schools, and Burnett Bayland Community Center.
The list of polling places and other voting information are available at HarrisVotes.com.
Bellaire will install its new mayor — the first in eight years — in January, along with three City Councilmembers elected last month: incumbent Catherine Lewis, and Cindy Cohen Taylor and Jackie Georgiou.
