Presbyterian Middle School students and faculty lent a hand to nine nonprofit organizations in the Houston community for an entire school day on Dec. 9 as a part of the school’s Annual Middle School Day of Service.
The organizations served included Medical Bridges, Nehemiah Center, Seniors Place, Interfaith Ministries, South Main Baptist Church, BEARing gifts, Emergency Aid Coalition, Hermann Park and MacGregor Elementary School.
With over 200 fifth- through eighth-grade middle school students, Presbyterian was able to use the day to make a difference and contribute valuable institutional help to the recipient organizations.
Service activities for Medical Bridges included sorting and packaging donated medical supplies to be shipped all over the world to remote hospitals in need.
Students working at the Emergency Aid Coalition site prepared bags of groceries and sack lunches for distribution, while at South Main Baptist Church, students contributed their aid in cleaning and organizing areas for the children’s ministry,
At Interfaith Ministries, which had collected an entire warehouse full of donated items including clothing, mattresses, books, toys and kitchen items, students sorted the donated materials.
At the Nehemiah Center, students from Presbyterian Middle interacted with preschool children by making Christmas ornaments, reading books and singing songs. This provided an opportunity for middle schoolers to be positive role models.
Students at the Senior’s Place Senior Center performed a concert of Christmas carols for the residents. At Hermann Park, students weeded flower bulbs and planted iris bulbs in the Japanese gardens.
Organizers noted that one of the many insights Presbyterian Middle School students gleaned during their day of service was that many nonprofit institutions need help throughout the year, regardless of the holiday season.
