Presbyterian School Opens Outdoor Education Campus

September 4, 2008 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The walls of Presbyterian School expanded last week when the school’s fifteen acre Outdoor Education Campus became an extension of the fourth grade classroom. The Presbyterian Outdoor Education Campus, located at 288 and Reed Road, served as a spring board for environmental learning where the curriculum was integrated across several disciplines.
The student’s experiences at the OEC were unified by the theme “Maps, Directions and Orienteering.” Following a morning outdoor chapel service, the fourth graders rotated through three outdoor based classes. In science class, the students worked with compasses, recording their movement in degrees and paces. In physical education class, students explored the track and field by following north-south-east-west directions. In the creativity class, children used Alpha Smart keyboards to write stories and poems about an experience of being lost.
In the weeks to come, all Lower School grades will share in similar experiences as the outdoor campus becomes a weekly part of the students’ education. Presbyterian School’s Outdoor Campus provides space for sports and athletics, environmental learning, nature trails, play areas and outdoor worship.
