General Motors has announced it will dramatically expand an existing recall of its 2011 Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac sport utility vehicles due to an axle flaw that could result in an accident.
The initial recall affected less than 1,300 vehicles. The new recall adds another 26,751 SUVs, bringing the total to more than 28,000.
The vehicles are being recalled because cross pins in the axle were not properly heat-treated, making them susceptible to failure. If the pin breaks, wheels could lock up completely and result in a sudden loss of control and a crash.
GM said if the pin fractures, the driver could hear a banging noise from the axle; however, a broken pin could also happen without warning.
Among the 28,013 vehicles included in the recall are the Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV 1500 and EXT 1500; the Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado 1500, Suburban 1500 and Tahoe; and the GMC Canyon, Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL 1500.
All the recalled vehicles are 2011 models.
Although not all cross pins are defective, dealerships have been instructed to replace all of the pins in affected vehicles as a precaution.
The recall effort is expected to begin within the next week.
Vehicle owners with questions are urged to contact their local dealership or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
