Rice, UH Composition Students To Perform Works Using Poems By Middle School Students
Composition students at Rice University and University of Houston have created new musical works using poems written by students from Grady Middle School in workshops led by WITS writers and Da Camera musicians. Music performance students, a string quartet and two singers, from Rice and UH will perform the new works at noon today, April 1, in the Grand Foyer, Wortham Theater Center, Texas at Smith. Several Grady students will be in attendance and will read their poetry.
The performance is part of Da Camera of Houston’s free lunchtime performance series, A Little Day Music, presenting a performance entitled The New Songs Project. A Little Day Music is sponsored by Waste Management.
Sample song lyrics from students include:
I am from Braeswood apartments
From living next to the Bayou
I am from unmatched furniture
From an unwanted past
From a never closing window
And an always-stuck door
From an annoying, beeping smoke alarm.
I am from Granny’s mouthwatering dumplings
From award winning taste
I am from my grandma’s sausage gumbo
From juicy fajitas
