Students at Roberts Elementary School come from 40 countries, and together with their families they will celebrate and share their diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds at the school’s “Children of the World” International Festival on Friday, Nov. 14.
The annual festival will feature informational displays as well as the music, dance, literature, food and drinks of many countries. The International Festival will be held at Roberts, 6000 Greenbriar, from 3-6 p.m.
Pre-K and Kindergarten will set up stands for Australia and New Zealand; first graders will cover Europe, the UK and Ireland; second graders will cover Southeast Asia and Japan; third graders will cover the Indian Subcontinent; fourth graders will handle North, Central, and South America; and fifth grade will cover the Middle East and Africa. Students in grades two through five are doing their own research for the event under the direction of their teachers, and younger students are getting assistance.
“We are so excited about our International Festival this year,” said Roberts Principal Linda Smith. “For the past eight years thousands of students, families and community members have come to experience our festival, including the Roberts’ halls full of displays, introducing passersby to life around the world, and the various booths which introduce country-specific customs, food and traditions. The festival extends to an outside venue where dances and music from various cultures are celebrated. The purpose of the festival is to expose the children of the school to the cultures of the more than 40 countries from which the students of the school originate. Our students gain so much from this experience and continue to talk about it even after they leave Roberts.”
