The application period for Houston ISD’s school choice options for the 2021-22 academic year will open Saturday (Sept. 19), and the district will hold the first of five virtual school choice fairs that day.
Deadline to apply for first-round consideration is Nov. 6. Qualified in-district applicants will be entered into a lottery at each campus where applications exceed spaces or scheduled for an audition at performance schools.
Families interested in exploring the options at 112 magnet schools and choice transfers to all 280 HISD campuses, who want to fill out an application, or who want to sign up for Microsoft Teams access to one of the school choice fairs can do so at ChooseHISD.com.
Among the options are fine arts, language immersion, dual-language, international studies, International Baccalaureate Montessori, single-gender college prep academies, Vanguard gifted and talented, STEM and STEAM focus; specialty high schools in such fields as energy, law, medicine and research, and performing and visual arts, and five-year Early College schools that offer a high school diploma and associate’s degree and Futures Academies which blend academics and career training for in-demand professions.
There will be additional fairs on Oct. 3, 17 and 31, and another on Feb. 13, all taking place from 9 a.m.-noon.
From Sept. 24-Nov. 5, the district is planning to offer personal tours of magnet campuses every Thursday. Elementary and K-8 school tours will begin at 9 a.m., with middle and high schools opening for tours at 1 p.m.
