Time is running out to receive a deduction on 2011 property taxes.
To receive a deduction for federal income tax purposes, taxes must be paid on or before Dec. 31.
“You’ll enjoy the holidays more if you pay your taxes or at least have a plan to get them paid,” Tax Assessor-Collector Don Sumners said.
Residents who do not need a tax deduction can pay them on or before Jan. 31 without penalty or interest.
“Your opportunities to pay or get assistance in person are dwindling,” Sumners said.
All 15 Harris County branches will be closed Friday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Dec. 26 and Monday, Jan. 2.
Property tax bills are available online at www.hctax.net.
To comply with the state’s next business day payment law, taxes paid on Tuesday, Jan. 3, will be posted as paid on Dec. 31, 2011 whether paid in person, online via www.hctax.net or by mail if the envelope is postmarked on or before Jan. 3, 2012 by the U.S. Postal Service.
