‘Tis the season to recycle Christmas trees, lights in West U

December 28, 2020 by Charlotte Aguilar

West U residents can recycle Christmas trees and lights at special drop offs again this year beginning today (Monday, Dec 28).

The holiday light dropoff, in conjunction with the Houston Zoo, is taking place through Jan. 15. Residents can drop off their unwanted strings of lights at the Public Works Department, 3826 Amherst St., Community Building at 6104 Auden St., and West U Recreation Center, 4210 Bellaire Blvd.

Tree-cycling will be conducted during that same period, with residents leaving their trees curbside for pickup by city crews, to be transported to a local composting firm and turned into mulch.

Trees may not be flocked or have ornaments, stands or any foreign objects — or else they will be treated as regular household waste and landfilled.

Be patient: On collection days with high volume, the city warns that trees may not get picked up the same day they’re placed curbside.
