July 29, 2008 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

Houston’s Theatre Under The Stars will host the first North American Touring production of “The Color Purple” for 16 performances in September.
Tickets are now on sale for the Oprah Winfrey-produced musical. Performances will run Sept. 16-28 at the Hobby Center.
Nominated for 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “The Color Purple” continues a record-breaking run on Broadway. The production is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Alice Walker and subsequent film by Steven Spielberg.
As on Broadway, the first North American Tour of “The Color Purple” is directed by Gary Griffin. The production features a Grammy-nominated score, a libretto by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by the Grammy winning team of Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
The original Broadway creative team has been reunited for the tour, including Tony Award winner John Lee Beatty (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt (lighting), Jon Weston (sound), Jonathan Tunick (orchestrations) and Kevin Stites (music supervisor).
For ticket information, contact Theatre Under The Stars at 713-558-TUTS (8887) or e-mail boxoffice@tuts.com.
