TWU Has Largest Higher Education Team Participating In Race For The Cure

Texas Woman’s University was recognized as having the largest team participating in the higher education category during the 2008 Komen Houston Race for the Cure.

TWU had 80 students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends take part in the race. The team, known as the “Pioneers for the Cure,” raised $2,956 in registration fees and donations for the event.

“We have had many groups from TWU participate in the race before, but this year was our first concerted effort to recruit one large TWU team in Houston,” said Amy O’Keefe, director of commuter and non-traditional student services at TWU.

“Supporting the Race for the Cure is a natural fit for TWU,” said Veronica Castillo, a master of occupational therapy student and the TWU team captain. “Many TWU students will be the healthcare providers of people with breast cancer. And many on our team have a personal connection to the cause, either having lost someone to the disease or are survivors themselves.”

“The support from TWU Houston this year was overwhelming, in particular with the race happening so close after Hurricane Ike,” said O’Keefe. “The fact that so many from the TWU community walked and donated money shows how much this important cause means to them.”
