Colton Tooley
The University of Texas at Austin student that fired apparently random shots then killed himself with an AK-47 assault rifle Tuesday morning in the school’s library has been identified as 19-year-old sophomore math major Colton Tooley.
An all-clear was issued Tuesday afternoon for the locked-down campus after it was determined that there was no second suspect.
Police theorize differing descriptions of the suspect from witnesses may have led some to believe there was a second person involved.
Tooley killed himself on the sixth floor of the university’s Perry-Castaneda Library and has been identified as a student who acted alone.
Classes remained cancelled for the rest of the day.
The incident began shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday when the suspect, described as a Caucasian male dressed in a black suit and black tie, ran across the campus near the library firing an assault rifle “randomly,” according to witnesses. The man then ran into the library, firing additional rounds inside the building before killing himself.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said officers recovered an AK-47 assault rifle near the dead suspect.
No students were reported injured in the incident.
The campus remained on lock-down for much of the day as police and SWAT teams secured the scene and searched for a possible second suspect.
Officers from the University of Texas Police Department, Austin Police Department, Travis County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety all responded to the campus to assist in the search.
