University of St. Thomas has been named by AARP to its 2009 list of Best Employers for Workers Over 50. This annual recognition program acknowledges companies and organizations whose policies best address an aging workforce.
AARP’s Best Employer list recognizes companies and organizations for demonstrating exemplary practices in the recruitment, retention and promotion of mature workers. It also distinguishes companies that foster a workplace that supports the aging workforce and that encourages workers to remain active.
“AARP commended the University of St. Thomas for creating and fostering a workplace that is supportive of the contributions of older workers and for creating an age-diverse workplace,” said UST’s Human Resources Director John Meuser.
Thirty-nine percent of the University of St. Thomas employees are 50 or older, with an average length of service of 10 years. The University employs 636 faculty and staff.
To be considered for the list, companies submit a comprehensive application that includes questions about their human resources practices and policies. Areas of consideration include recruiting practices, training, education and career development opportunities, and flexible work arrangements. Retiree and health benefits are also considered.
“My congratulations to the leaders of our staff and faculty who have worked so diligently to establish a rewarding and supportive work environment at St Thomas,” said UST President Dr. Robert Ivany. “We can be proud of the tradition of caring you have established. Our recognition as one of the top 50 organizations in the United States is a distinct honor.”
