The Patrons for Bellaire Parks canceled its largest annual fundraiser Tuesday night (March 10) because of coronavirus concerns.
The 12th annual Wine and Tapas gala had been scheduled for March 28 in Bellaire Town Square, an outdoor event with food, wine, auctions, music and dancing that was to honor Bellaire Police Chief Byron Holloway and wife Linda.
“This was a difficult decision – Wine and Tapas is an incredibly important event for our community and for our park system,” the cancellation announcement read. “We weighed the practicality and health risks of holding the in-person component of the gala, and it was decided that the community and the health of our area families need to be our priority.”
Patrons will salvage some of the fundraising aspects with an online silent auction, cork pull and other potential digital components, and said the Holloways have agreed to be the honorees for the 2021 event.
Largely through Wine and Tapas and Tents in Town, its annual urban campout, the support group has raised nearly $2 million for Bellaire parks, green spaces and trails, including its most recent efforts which have installed playgrounds equipped for children of all abilities at a number of the city’s pocket parks.
