Early voting starts at 7 a.m. today (Nov. 29) for the Dec. 11 runoff elections in Harris County, including a fiercely contested Bellaire City Council seat and the choice of who will represent West University and Bellaire on the Houston ISD board of trustees.
The only polling place open in the area is at Houston Community College West Loop, 5601 West Loop South, in room C108. Balloting will be conducted from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily through Dec. 7, with the exception of Sunday, Dec. 5, when the hours are from 12 noon-7 p.m.

The eventual outcome in Bellaire will determine whether Mayor Andrew Friedberg regains control of City Council, which slipped away two years ago when three independent-minded candidates were elected and began challenging the mayor and city management on fiscal and operational matters and on philosophical issues of development vs. Bellaire’s longstanding reputation as a “City of Homes.”
Friedberg ran unopposed in re-election to his fourth term as mayor, and made endorsements for the first time, backing a slate of three candidates for council, two of whom — Win Frazier and Ross Gordon — were elected outright on Nov. 2.
The third Friedberg pick, Brian Witt, is facing independent Andréa Ehlers for the final seat, Position 5. Ehlers outpolled Witt by eight votes in the general election, and the third candidate in the race, David Montalvo, has endorsed her in the runoff.
On Sunday, Witt’s campaign touted an endorsement by retired Bellaire Police Chief Byron Holloway, a Houston resident.
The HISD trustee race is between one-term incumbent Sue Deigaard of southwest Houston, who narrowly missed winning the seat outright with more than 49 percent of the vote, and Caroline Walter of West University, who is backed by conservative Republican organizations. Deigaard has received the endorsement of the third candidate in the general election, educator Maria Benzon of Bellaire, who garnered 14 percent of the vote.
