Transportation officials have closed the West Loop from Beechnut to Bellaire due to icing conditions.
All traffic is being diverted onto surface streets until the freeway can be sanded.
Continuing icing on all area roadways is expected for the next several hours, and local authorities are urging residents to stay at home if at all possible.
Freeways, overpasses, bridges and some city streets are experiencing icing conditions. Numerous accidents, including at least one fatality, are being reported throughout the region.
