West U cancels Fourth of July event, puts hold on Parks & Rec activities

July 1, 2020 by Charlotte Aguilar

West University had already scaled back its plans for a traditional community Fourth of July, and now even those have been canceled — along with reductions in non-essential services that will start Friday.

The city had planned a “bike, walk or run through West U Parks” community Fourth event at four locations where residents would be able to pick up a giveaway item at each. But in an announcement, West U indicated that vendors had backed out and safety concerns had increased with the surge in COVID-19 activity in the Houston area that has caused Harris County and the state to pause reopening plans.

In addition, West U will cancel all Parks and Recreation programs and classes starting July 4, and reduce Recreation Center occupancy to a maximum 50 percent through reservations and close the locker area.

Colonial Park Pool will remain open by reservation only, with a maximum occupancy of 50 percent and no shower facilities available.

The city offers email updates on COVID-19 developments. Click here to subscribe by choosing “Coronavirus/COVID-19 Updates” under the “News Flash” section.
