The numbers told an impressive story about the 16th annual Fathers & Flashlights urban campout Nov. 5-6 on the fields at West University Elementary School: 517 youngsters, 250 dads, 240-plus volunteer moms and $137,000 raised for West U parks.
Activities included catch-and-release fishing, a T-shirt tie dye station, inflatables, various arts and crafts, visits from exotic animals, performances, and yes — sleeping under the stars in tents. Food drew raves, from the Pit Room barbecue to treats from Tiny’s Milk & Cookies and more options throughout the overnighter.
The Hapgood, Hill and Knysh families co-chaired, spearheaded by moms Kelly Beth Hapgood, Katie Hill and Sarah Knysh.
This is one of two big annual fundraisers by the Friends of West University Parks Fund, which provides major support and resources to the city’s parks and recreation programs. Next up: The Park Lovers Ball on Feb. 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel.
