West U. Firefighters Get Grant For Communication System

November 11, 2009 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The West University Place Fire Department has won nearly $9,000 to purchase new communication equipment that officials say will enhance their emergency scene operations and safety.
“Communications at any emergency call is critical when every second counts,” said West U. Fire Chief Steve Ralls in a statement.
The grant of $8,888 is from Focus Insurance and Financial Services, and the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. The fire department is using the money to buy a wireless communication system that uses Bluetooth technology.
The system includes a face-piece-mounted microphone and a communication console that attaches to a firefighter’s two-way radio. It allows the fireman to communicate with other firefighters at the scene or other locations using the two-way radios.
The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company that provides needed equipment and training to local fire departments. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund issued over 1,400 grants totaling more than $23 million. Insurance agencies that sell Fireman’s Fund products help to fund the grants.
“We’re glad to be able to provide tangible support, particularly in this economy,” said Mickie Comiskey, chief operating officer of Focus Insurance and Financial Services, in the statement.
Executives from the companies providing the grant will join Ralls at the next West U. City Council meeting to present more information about the grant.
