UPDATE at 4:09 p.m.: The city of West U reports that the gas leak has been repaired, and Buffalo Speedway has reopened.

UPDATE at 10 a.m.: CenterPoint Energy is onsite and has contained the gas leak. The roadway will remain closed until the repair has been complete.

West University emergency crews have closed Buffalo Speedway between Rice Boulevard and Tangley Street Tuesday morning (Oct. 26) due to a gas leak and are monitoring the air “to ensure the safety of nearby residents,” according to an alert from city officials.

This is the area where construction is currently going on for the Buffalo Speedway Project, to improve a large part of West U’s drainage and roadways.

Motorists are being asked to find alternate routes, and residents should stay up-to-date through city email and text alerts, social media, and the city website and project page here.
