West U Little League Community Mourns Death Of Former Coach

August 20, 2010 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The West U Little League community is mourning the death of Scott Everett “Scotty” Zornes, who died in a car accident on Aug. 15.
Zornes, 26, helped coach the WULL Seniors in 2009, leading them to a World Series Championship and was an active participant in West U sports.
“In an instant our world has changed,” a WULL parent, who preferred not to be named, said.
According to reports, Zornes was driving his truck around 4:30 a.m. on Bibb County Road 16, about 10 miles south of Brent, Ala. when he got into a one-car accident, catching his truck on fire.
Zornes is described by the people who knew him as “the life of the party kind of guy … bigger than life.”
“When you walked onto a ball field, you knew he was there,” a WULL parent said. “You gravitate towards him.”
Zornes was attending the University of Alabama for teaching and coaching and had just completed a summer internship as a student assistant with the Tide football program.
He wasn’t just a coach to the WULL team, he was a friend, a WULL parent said.
“He’s still 16 at heart.”
He attended St. Vincent de Paul School and graduated from St. Thomas High School and played football at Mary Hardin Baylor University.
He was also the recipient of a national award from The Positive Coaching Alliance in February of last year.
Zornes is survived by his parents, Scott and Mam; brother, Adam; and sister, Paige.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at West University United Methodist Church, 3611 University Blvd.
Contributions can be made in his honor to West U Little League – Scotty Zornes Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 25053, Houston, TX 77265.
