A combination of changing usage trends and staffing issues has caused the city of West University Place to reduce its Recreation Center hours.
The new hours, which kicked in on Sunday (Oct. 1), are:
Monday through Thursday: 5:30 a.m.- 8 p.m.
Friday: 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m.
Weekends: 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
This reduces the schedule by one hour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings — based on data provided by consultant 110% Inc. in a city-contracted study of recreation operations and finances for the City Council and Parks & Recreation and Senior advisory boards.
The new schedule also cuts a half-hour on Monday and Wednesday mornings. “The city has had difficulty filling many lifeguard shifts, resulting in hour changes over the last month,” according to Recreation Center Manager Brittany Bakes in a statement announcing the schedule changes. “Please be assured we did not make this change without careful consideration,” she wrote.
Bakes is available to respond to questions or concerns at 713.662.7439 or by email at bbakes@westutx.gov.
