West U Senior Center Collecting Old Cell Phones

April 13, 2010 by Essentials Staff Leave a Comment

The West University Place Senior Services office located at 6104 Auden St., is collecting old cell phones.
The National Council on Aging is partnering with Senior Centers all across America to recycle old phones, protecting the environment and benefitting centers for participating.
There are over 500 million used cell phones in the United States alone. Typically when a new phone is purchased the old one is thrown away or tossed into a drawer and forgotten about.
Throwing away a phone is dangerous to our environment; they contain materials like lead and cadmium, which have been linked to various forms of cancer.
Senior centers across America are rewarded for participating in the cell phone recycling program; each phone could be worth up to $30 if recycled through a senior center.
To donate an old phone, drop it by the West University Place Senior Center.
