West U’s Laura Higley resigns state court seat amid family fight

Former West University Mayor Laura Higley has resigned the seat on the Texas First Court of Appeals that she has held since 2002, as her family argues about her condition, care and custody in a probate court.

Higley’s resignation, confirmed by her husband, current West U Mayor Bob Higley, today (Wednesday, Nov. 6) was sent to Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday.

Her two adult sons were in probate court Monday after filing in mid-October to take guardianship of their 72-year-old mother from their father, claiming she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease just days earlier and is no longer able to perform her judicial duties, drive a vehicle, or make decisions involving her own care and finances.

Higley was West U mayor from 1989-91, after serving a term as mayor pro tem.
