Houston ISD has confirmed that 16 of its 280 schools — including Bellaire HS, Pershing and Lanier middle schools, and Roberts Elementary — are closed Tuesday (Oct. 20) because of suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.
In the second day of what was supposed to be a return to a face-to-face learning option, students on those campuses are being taught through the online system that has been in place since March, when the pandemic first swelled.
HISD also revised its earlier report of a confirmed case at Bellaire HS to a presumed case at that campus.
Schools reportedly with confirmed cases are Foerster ES, Lewis ES, and Roberts ES.
Those with presumed cases, according to HISD, are Bellaire HS, Daily ES, Hines-Caldwell ES, Lanier MS, Lawson MS, Pershing MS, Pilgrim Academy, Piney Point ES, Valley West ES, Waltrip HS, Westbury HS, and Whittier ES.
The Houston Academy for International Studies, a high school, reportedly has both a presumed and a confirmed case of the virus.
The district protocols, outlined in its Communicable Disease Plan, call for closing of campuses where presumed or confirmed cases are discovered, a return to distance learning, and a deep cleaning of the facilities.
